05/15/09 - Many people don't know that I have a rather large coin collection. This coin is neither the best or most expensive in my collection, but it is by far the oldest. When I purchased it I was told it depicted Constantine the Great. After some research I now believe it really shows one of his 3 sons (Constantine II, Constans, or Constantius). It was minted in Barcelona, so my best guess is that it is Constantine II, who ruled in Hispania. At any rate, it would have been minted some time between 306 and 361 A.D.

05/14/09 - Raisins are one of those foods that I just don't understand why people still eat them. Back in the day they made sence. They kept for a long time and they were the only way a lot of people were able to eat fruit. But why would you willingly eat a raisin when you have access to fresh grapes?

04/23/09 - My second (succesful (sort of)) beef tallow candle. The original plan was to make candles from tallow in a traditional manner. Well dipping them is difficult, so I thought I'd try molding them in a wax candle mold. Fact is, wax and tallow are totally different. So I ended up making this (and the candle that preceded it) in the bottom of a paper milk carton. These candles burn fine (as long as you use the proper size wick), and with the addition of a tiny amount of candle fragrance you can't even smell the fat burning. You probably can't tell from the photo that this candle is dyed blue and smells like rain.

By the end of the day I'll devoting a whole post on my other blog to my candle making adventures, so you should go check that out.
